Calcium Reactors are a means to add highly soluble calcium chloride to your reef system without having to continually purchase chemicals and measure and add them regularly. They can also be set up as an automated component requiring little intervention to operate.
Besides the calcium reactor you will need a CO2 cylinder and regulator to add CO2 to your reactor.
The way it works is you fill your reactor with aragonite filter media. It looks a white granule with different grades from oatmeal size to small pebbles. When CO2 is applied inside the calcium reactor through the bubble counter, the pH is lowered and the aragonite media begins to dissolve. The lower the pH, the faster the rate of dissolution and consequently, the more calcium is released. In addition, the alkalinity is raised which aids in stabilizing the pH in your tank. All good. Follow the instructions carefully as to not impact the pH of your tank adversely.
